![]() I've also fooled around with pure magic and fight/fight/craft. I've heard ranged weapons used to be poor but recent changes have made them a bit more practical, and dammit, I want a game other than CoH where ranged attacks are USEFUL! One of the mask-wearing fellows a "jack of all trades" right now with an eye towards making him a gunslinger. So far, I've got my "main" - Aliasi, of course. PM me if you're going to play I'd love to group up with some RPGnetters! If anyone's interested, my character's Telanor, a Fyros I'm about to leave the newbie area and make my way to the mainland. I love the game - and actually, as I understand it, after my 14-day trial is up, I can purchase the game for $29.99 as a Christmas bonus promotion thing, so I'm pretty sure that's what I'll be doing. In fact, it was pretty easy for me to understand, so if you don't, ask away and I'll help. Some people complain that the game is hard to get a grasp of, but I got the hang of it right away. The story-driving quests are reserved for guilds, since they're the type that'll take a large number of people to complete. The game's quest system right now pretty much resembles World of Warcraft - someone gives you a task like "take a package to this town" or "kill some of these monsters" or "bring me an item". Similarly, at level 20 Magic becomes Offensive and Defensive Magic, and.well, I'll let you guys know what comes after that tonight, because I hit level 20 Magic last night. Fight branches into Melee and Ranged at level 20 (each skill tree eventually ends at level 250), and I believe Melee branches at level 50 into Sword, Axe, Polearm, et cetera. You start out with four skill categories - Fight, Magic, Craft and Harvest - and they branch out as you gain experience in them. I created a harvesting skill that searches for Choice materials only (for when I'm looking to craft good items), and one that searches for everything (for when I just want junk to practice crafting with). When I bought the second-level ice and acid spells, I also created a custom ice spell that was free of sap (mana) cost but took awhile longer to cast, and I created an acid spell that used a bit more sap but was faster to cast and had a longer range. Whenever you purchase a skill, you're actually purchasing a set of action components called Stanzas thus, not only do you get the skill you purchased, but you get its components so you can mix and match them with other Stanzas to create your own custom actions. Add in that oath bark has different qualities than, say, gingo leather, and the variety of items is almost Diablo-esque in scope. Since each "plan" or "recipe" has at least 3 components - a dagger requires three items for a blade, two for a grip, one for a counterweight and one more that I forget offhand - you can mix and match a lot. A Basic set of oath bark is intrinsically inferior to a Choice set of oath bark, and Choice oath bark of quality 15 is inferior to Choice oath bark of quality 25. Each item has its quality determined in two ways: by number, and by descriptor. There's a ton of variety when it comes to harvesting and crafting. I've made myself a pretty decent set of boots, and I crafted myself my two daggers - I may not use them, but damn it, I set out to wield to knives, and I'm sticking to that plan. ![]() Instead, I indulged, and went Magic/Craft/Harvest, and as of this morning I'm an Apprentice Magician with noticable talent in Harvesting, and I'm working on my Crafting. I had planned to take Fight/Fight/Fight and wield two knives, and blossom into a speedy fighter. The lack of defined 'classes' is a big plus for me - I was originally going to take the easy route, and play a 'fighty' character you get three skill packs at character creation, and if you select 3 of the same type, you become more skilled in that area. A few times, gingoes have caught me unawares and attacked me from behind. The sunsets and sunrises are incredible.Īll of that can make you forget that you're an outsider in a dangerous environment. Overhead, the roots of the living planet Atys stretch off into the distance, and the moons, sun, and asteroid belt glimmer, amazingly clear even during daylight. Sometimes the herd unites and kills the attacker, and other times they panic and run off, and a small or unwary yubo becomes gingo lunch. The wildlife (mobs, if you want to stop being immersive ) live in a predator-prey cycle for instance, the carnivorous gingoes attack the peaceful yubo herbivores and eat them. Underfoot, small bugs and even snakes scuttle and slither about. The trees wave in the breeze, and sand swirls around, driven up by gusts of wind. Thunderstorms light up the sky, revealing ominous clouds and flocks of agigated birds. ![]() The environment is very aesthetically appealing to me. The free trial began yesterday, and I really was going to get on here and tell you guys what I thought, but I was too busy playing Ryzom.
